Overview of Financial Requirements ~ updated December 2008
The Tagtruk Mukpo Special Needs Trust was created to supplement the care provided to Taggie through state and federal agencies.
Currently, we employ a caregiver who provides respite care for the Shared Living Provider (SLP). The caregiver works 6 (24 hour) days a month. Our annual budget, which includes payroll and payroll taxes, payroll processing fees, materials and support for enrichment of Taggie's care model, as well as some postage and printing expenses total approximately $15,500/year.
These funds are provided through gifts to the Trust from individuals - including Taggie's family. These gifts are not tax-deductible. The Trust relies primarily on these gifts for its ability to fund additional care.
With the addition of a caregiver employed by the Trust, the Shared Living Provider is able to augment the limited respite days that the State Budget provides. The Trust also commits funds to explore alternative care models and methodologies in Taggie's care.
The Budget
The budget shows what it takes to fund ongoing 24-hour care for Taggie - about $88,000/year. Please find details on the Cost of Care page.
The State of Vermont's Role
About 83% of the budget, or $73,000 per year, is provided through different state and federal programs including Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security. Through the efforts of Taggie's guardian, Susan Taney, a 'Medicaid waiver'--which provides the bulk of State financing--was granted in late 2003. As a result, the State of Vermont is now a 'partner' in Taggie's care program. Their financial support is indicative of their recognition of the positive steps the care team has taken over the last ten years to stabilize Taggie's condition and their desire to see this model continue.
To be Funded Privately
At the same time, State and Federal monies are not adequate to fund Taggie's care in total. About 17%, or $15,500 per year, needs to be funded privately. This is a significant annual sum that will require supporters to establish an ongoing commitment that can provide for continuity of care and additional respite care for the Shared Living Provider.
